What is volleyball

Volleyball is a dynamic team sport played on a rectangular court, where two teams of six players compete to score points by sending the ball over the net and into their opponent’s side while defending their own. The game emphasizes precision, strategic plays, and teamwork, with specific positions assigned to players that dictate their roles in offense and defense.

Originally developed in the late 19th century as a blend of basketball and handball, volleyball has grown into a globally recognized sport, played both recreationally and professionally. It is particularly popular in countries like the United States, Brazil, and Japan, with thriving leagues and international competitions. Today, more than 800 million people worldwide participate in volleyball, from casual beach games to elite tournaments like the Olympics and the FIVB World Championships.

Some of the most competitive domestic volleyball leagues include Italy’s SuperLega, Brazil’s Superliga, and Japan’s V.League, with the United States also expanding its professional scene. Internationally, the sport is highlighted by major tournaments such as the FIVB Volleyball World Championship, the Olympic Games, and the Volleyball Nations League. Recognized as an Olympic sport since 1964, volleyball continues to thrive on the global stage, with both indoor and beach volleyball drawing massive audiences and showcasing the sport’s fast-paced, high-energy gameplay.

Olympic Games

In 1995 Netball became a “recognized” sport of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and in August 2021, World Netball declared its intention to work with Netball Australia to make a compelling case for Netball’s inclusion in the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games.
