What is Netball
Netball is a fast-paced team sport played on a rectangular court, where two teams of seven players compete to score points by shooting a ball through their opponent’s goal ring while defending their own. The game emphasizes passing, strategic movement, and teamwork, with specific positions assigned to players that dictate where they can move on the court
Originally developed in the late 19th century as a women’s alternative to basketball, netball has since grown into a globally recognized sport, especially popular in Commonwealth nations. It is played both recreationally and professionally, with leagues and tournaments held worldwide. Today, more than 20 million people across 80+ countries participate in netball, from school-level games to elite international competitions.
Some of the most competitive domestic leagues include the Netball Superleague in the UK, Suncorp Super Netball in Australia, and New Zealand’s ANZ Premiership. Internationally, the sport is highlighted by major tournaments such as the World Netball Championships, the Commonwealth Games, and the high-intensity Fast5 Series. While netball gained recognition from the International Olympic Committee in 1995, it has yet to be included in the Olympic Games
Olympic Games
In 1995 Netball became a “recognized” sport of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and in August 2021, World Netball declared its intention to work with Netball Australia to make a compelling case for Netball’s inclusion in the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games.
